A Daily Skin Care Routine at Home

Healthy skin requires daily practices including cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturizing as part of an overall skincare regime. Drinking plenty of water and eating foods rich in antioxidants and nutrients will also assist.

Cleansing is a key step in any skin care routine. It removes excess oil and bacteria that could potentially lead to breakouts, while helping keep pores clear by clearing away dead skin cells from pores.

No matter the kind of cleanser or anti-age formula you choose, it’s essential to cleanse the skin twice each day – morning and night – in order to get rid of makeup, dirt and pollution that might have built up throughout the day. Washing both ways helps restore natural balance of the skin.

Your choice of cleanser should depend on your skin type. Those suffering from acne-prone skin might benefit from selecting a face wash with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. People with sensitive skin might prefer something milder like cleansing balm or cleansing oil for optimal cleansing results.

Stay clear of products with ingredients that could interfere with cancer treatments, such as retinol or certain herbs that could interact with chemotherapy medications and cause adverse side effects.


An effective daily skin care routine is key to attaining natural, radiant complexion. Be sure to wash (using an effective cleanser tailored for your skin type if necessary) in the morning and again at bedtime to eliminate impurities and excess oil buildup from your pores.

If you have oily skin, choose a cleanser containing salicylic acid; those with dry or sensitive skin should choose a creamy face wash instead. After cleansing, apply toner using a cotton pad (avoid alcohol-based formulas as these may dry the skin further).

If your skin needs extra hydration at night, use a hydrating mist or toner with humectants like lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, and glycerine as an extra boost of hydration. For best results, toner should go on before heavier formulas like serums and moisturizing creams to maximize effectiveness; then go to sleep knowing the benefits of your skincare routine have started working (please keep in mind it takes six-12 weeks for them to take full effect!)


Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals of skincare (cleanse, tone and moisturize), it’s time to upgrade with face serums. These lightweight elixirs work wonders in treating dark spots, wrinkles and enlarged pores – an invaluable asset in keeping skin in top condition!

Serums contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than cleansers or creams, enabling you to experience visible transformation more rapidly. Select the formula based on your skin concern and apply twice daily, morning and evening.

Serums come in both water- and oil-based formats, but their application remains the same. After cleansing, toning and essence application but before moisturizer or face oil application is recommended; applying these products allows them to penetrate more deeply into your complexion as an additional step of your skincare routine. Exfoliants or sun protection ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C should typically be used first thing in the morning while those focused on hydration (like brightening serums or antioxidant-rich retinol serums). Include a moisturizing cream into your daily routine for optimal hydration and softening of skin. All skin types need moisturizer, especially during the cold and dry weather of winter when heat and indoor humidity contribute to dryness. Moisturizing also keeps oil glands functioning healthily so as not to produce too much oil–an especially helpful strategy for menopausal women and those in perimenopause.

Always apply moisturizer when your skin is damp after cleansing or rinsing to ensure optimal absorption. For dry skin types, look for serums containing moisturizing ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid or botanical oils to provide extra hydration and boost hydration levels.

Order of application of products is essential, starting with cleansing. After this comes toners, exfoliants and serums (if applicable). For acne-prone skin try foaming cleansers with anti-inflammatory ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for best results before finally applying sunscreen.
